Backhaul

Backhaul is, in ISP terms, the link to the main core network, and the rest of the internet.

Most LLU providers provide a fibre link to their backhaul to the exchange, where the MSAN or DSLAM connects to the backhaul and provides the ADSL service to the customers.

If the backhaul link is not fast enough, customers on exchanges using that link might experience a slowdown at peak times or at any time that there is a demand for too much bandwidth.

Some ISPs, like Easynet, UKOnline, and Sky own their own backhaul between their LLU exchanges and Telehouse, however other ISPs like Be*, TalkTalk and Tiscali rent backhaul from their LLU equipment to Telehouse from third parties like NTL or Bulldog.
