Default BT Clients spamming router

Hi,

I use BT to dl (mostly the WoW patches, since they have been pretty huge of late!) However, i have found that certain clients (u Torrent mainly) will totally kill my router. I have had to reset it in the past as it has been unable to hold a connection. Someone told me it was because the client was spamming the router, but can someone explain what this means?

*looks sheepish*

Didn't have the nerve to admit I didn't know what they meant!

Don't worry, I don't think they know what they meant either!

You might be suffering from the large number of open and half-open connections that torrenting involves. This could cause router problems, and definitely causes Windows problems in XP. Try download LvlLord's TCPIP.SYS patcher to fix that (up the limit to, say, 4000).

Also, if you max your upstream, your downstream and latency will suffer - so watch out for that. Let your torrent app max your upstream so you can find out what the practical limit is (set unlimited upstream / 10kbps download with nothing else running, see how fast downstream gets), then shave 10-15% off that speed (so if it levels out at 80k/s, limit your upload to 65-70k/s). Throttling your upstream further might help your max download speed a little, but it might also reduce the chance that other torrent clients will want to share with you.

Hope this makes sense and helps - good luck!

Turn down your max connections in your BT client to something reasonable.I have mine set at 75 per torrent and never download more than one torrent at a time.

I too have had to limit my global max connections to 250 otherwise my router dies.

Also make sure to limit the upstream bandwidth to no more than about 75% of your upstream throughput.

In my case, I get about 1050Kbit/sec upstream throughput, and limit my upstream speed to 96K when not downloading and 72K when downloading.

I find with these settings I don't get any issues with the routing table filling up and causing my router to fall over
